How to Survive Thanksgiving being Gluten and Dairy Free

Writer: Rosie MayRosie May

Before I begin I wanted to let you know that I write as if I am talking, so you will notice that I am all about bullet points. 😊

What contains gluten:

  • Gravy

  • Stuffing

  • Dinner Rolls

  • Cornbread

  • Macaroni and Cheese

  • Green Bean Casserole

  • Candied Yams

  • Pumpkin Pie

What contains dairy:

  • Mashed Potatoes if made with butter and/or milk which is almost every time.

  • Turkey basted with butter

  • Macaroni and Cheese

  • Cornbread

  • Corn Casserole

  • Green Bean Casserole

  • Candied Yams

What IS gluten and dairy free

  • Cranberry Sauce

  • Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallows

  • Tossed Salad with no cheese. Beware: Caesar dressing has dairy in it.

So at this point, you may be thinking what CAN I eat this Holiday season! Don’t worry all the recipes above can be prepared both gluten and dairy free! I will say that some are easier than others… not going to lie.

The Easy Swaps:

Turkey. Prepare with dairy free butter such as Earth Balance or Country Crock Plant Based brand.

Mashed Potatoes. Prepare with dairy free butter such as Earth Balance or Country Crock Plant Based brand. Also swap the milk with Almond milk original unsweetened.

Gravy. There are a few packets such as the 365 brand from Whole Foods and Simple Organic found at Fresh Thyme. My opinion is that the easiest and best option to use is the premade gluten and dairy free gravy from Primal Kitchen found at Fresh Thyme. It’s absolutely delicious!

Stuffing. There are a few gluten free box options such as Aleia’s, Ener-G. Both are delicious and easy to make!

Macaroni and Cheese. Annie’s has a gluten and dairy free Macaroni and Cheese which is awesome and easy to make!

Pumpkin Pie. Be sure that the crust is gluten free. Several brands such as Mi-Del brand and Wholly have gluten free pie crusts. As for the filling, use the dairy free Almond milk unsweetened original as a substitute for the milk. Please see below the blog post link for the pumpkin pie recipe. Corn Casserole. Use dairy free milk instead of buttermilk. Also use dairy free cheddar cheese such as Daiya or Follow your Heart brand. The cream style corn appears to be gluten and dairy free. I would check the ingredients on the back to make sure there are no added ingredients in the brand you buy.

Sweet Potato Hash. Use dairy free butter instead of real butter.

Candied Yams. This is one that can be gluten and dairy free depending on how they are prepared. A few recipes show bourbon and butter in them. If that is the recipe just substitute the butter with dairy free butter and the bourbon with maple syrup or sugar.

The Harder Swaps:

Dinner Rolls. I usually buy the BFree brand.

Green Bean Casserole. This is challenging since it is very hard to find cream of mushroom and crispy onions that are gluten and dairy free. I use the Vivian’s brand that I order online. I have yet to find it in the grocery stores near me. For the crispy onions, use crushed potato chips or corn tortilla chips. Also, you can opt for the “healthy” version and put sautéed onions on top.

Additional tip: Take a tupperware container with your gluten and dairy free prepared food to a family gathering or Friendsgiving so that you are guaranteed to not have any food reactions. Trust me, I understand this can be somewhat awkward. It took me at least 6 years to be comfortable taking my “special” food to gatherings. However, I find it to be easier for the host to not worry about including gluten and dairy free items on the menu and it is obviously easier on me (and my stomach) to know I can enjoy the meal!

Hopefully these tips help you to enjoy the Holiday season even more!!

Don’t forget to wear your stretchy pants for Thanksgiving! 😊
